Seahawks come away from T1 with a perfect 3-0!
On a very windy Saturday afternoon the Under 17 Seahawks headed over to Poole to take on the newly formed teams of Poole Dolphins and Salisbury City Marauders. Farnham knights completed the 4 team tournament.
Poole and Salisbury are in the early stages of their existence and were only able to bring squads of 7 and 8 players each. Although Farnham are a more established outfit, they had a small squad of only 6. We brought almost all of our squad, an impressive 17!
Game 1 saw us take on the hosts, the Poole Dolphins. An impressive first half for the Seahawks restricted the Dolphins to no first downs! With a host of rookies in the Seahawks squad, a slow start soon saw us getting into a rhythm and took a 21-0 lead at half time. One of our youngest, Ryan Hart, grabbed a 43 yard pass from QB Alfie Birks for his first ever TD in contact football and also the first of the season for the Seahawks! Alfie had an impressive start to the season, throwing 84 yards and 2 Touchdowns, completing 7 of 17 passes! Another rookie with an impressive start to his career was Finn Osborne - Finn caught 5 passes for a total of 46 yards and 2 touchdowns! On the other side of the ball, the defence had 4 interceptions, 1 touchdown and a sack.
Game 2 saw us come up against our regular opponent - the Farnham Knights. On the very first play of the game, Rob Davey had a huge block allowing Jacob King to break off a 32 yard run and set the tone for the game. The block won Rob the Hammer Award for the whole tournament! Our QBs Alfie and Allan Lee split the duties and threw for a combined 95 yards and 3 TDs! Finn had another great game and recorded 6 receptions for 45 yards and 3 TDs. The run game was on form, with Finn Mobbs, Dan Opanszki, Jacob King and Rob Davey totalling over 200 yards combined! Again, defence was leading from the front. Our defensive captain, Will Rooney, recorded 7 tackles, 1 Interception and a fumble recovered for a touchdown! 2 long scores by Farnham kept the guys honest, but ultimately it was too no avail as the 'Hawks ran out 33-12 winners for a 2-0 start.
The third game saw us come up against another new team, the Salisbury City Marauders. The Marauders had two tough games before this, (recording their first ever win!) and because of this they were down to their last 5 players and to their credit they came out and gave everything they had! QB Allan Lee save this best for last and finished the game with 5 completions from 7 attempts, 89 yards and 3 TDs! Finn Mobbs rushed for 89 yards and 2 TDs and Finn Osborne rounded off a great tournament with 79 yards from 4 receptions and another 3 TDs! The game finished 58-0, the record books will show this as our biggest ever win at U17, but in reality, the Marauders were completely shattered after there first ever tournament and literally had to be carried off the field. They were an absolute credit to their coaches and team and we look forward to playing them again in the future!
So the Seahawks walked away with a 3-0 record and some broken Seahawks records as well! Allan Lee and Alfie Birks recorded the first and second completion percentages for QBs in a tournament. Finn Osborne broke Jack Pears record for the most receiving TDs in a tournament with 8, he was also 2nd for receiving yards and receptions in a tournament. Finn also took the Gamebreaker award for his amazing debut! Will Rooney recorded at least one of every defensive stat, Tackles, TDs, INTs, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, safety and a sack! A great start to the season and something amazing to build on!
